A branch of the US Department of Commerce whose stated mission is to “promote U.S. innovation and industrial competitiveness by advancing measurement science, standards, and technology in ways that enhance economic security and improve our quality of life.” NIST works closely with the private sector in standards development. The agency has played a prominent role in the development and promulgation of cybersecurity standards.
