  1. A form of perimeter defense that enforces a security policy by preventing access to unsafe sites or programs. A secure web gateway typically functions by either blacklisting or whitelisting specific connections, or by limiting the permissible functionality of particular applications. Unlike firewalls, secure web gateways operate at the application level as opposed to the packet level.
